Hold a Grudge texture powder

Short answerTexture powder: matte, lifted, messy, restyles with your hands. Clay: matte to low shine, firmer hold, more structured. Pomade: shine, slicked or defined, strongest hold. Pick by finish first, then hold.

Walk into any store and the men's hair aisle is a wall of jars. Most of it comes down to three things: powder, clay, pomade. Here is the difference, without the marketing.

Texture powder

A dry powder you tap into the roots. It grips each strand so hair lifts and separates, with zero shine. The hold moves with you and comes back when you run your fingers through it. Best for short to mid-length hair that wants volume. How to use it: here.

Hair clay

A thicker paste, usually with bentonite or kaolin clay. Matte finish, firmer hold, more definition. Good when you want a shape that stays put and a bit of thickness. Warm it in your palms first or it drags.

Pomade

The classic slick product. Oil-based or water-based, both give shine and a strong, set hold. Built for slicked-back, side-parted or pompadour styles. Not built for messy texture.

Which one for you

  • Messy, lifted, no shine: texture powder.
  • Textured but structured: clay, or clay with powder on top at the roots.
  • Slick and shiny: pomade.
  • Fine or thinning hair: powder. Clay and pomade weigh it down.

FAQ

Is texture powder better than clay?

For messy, lifted, matte hair, yes. Clay gives a firmer, more structured hold with a bit more weight. They can also be layered: clay first, powder at the roots.

What is the difference between texture powder and pomade?

Powder is dry, matte and restyles with your hands. Pomade is a shiny, set hold for slicked styles. Opposite finishes.

Which hair product is best for fine hair?

Texture powder. It lifts at the roots without the weight of clay or pomade.

Can you use texture powder with clay or pomade?

With clay, yes: clay for shape, a tap of powder at the roots for extra lift. With pomade, skip it; powder does not grip oily hair.
